New Years

Ah New Year, new you? That seems to be the title of every magazine cover… But how many of us set goals and never achieve them, theres nothing fun about that.

As you all know I’m traveling and Β I was at my brothers gym and there was this on the mirror..

Image

Yeah, Sounds about right.

While I am setting some big goals for 2012, I have big expectations, but I am hoping to achieve those lofty by setting small monthly goals and plans! So here’s my example!

Goal: Be more fit and healthy

Reason: I’ve always been thin but I want to clean up my diet, and gain some more muscle and get rid of the skinny fat, here are my first 3 months of plans πŸ™‚ I figure plans are good but I will need to reevaluate in a few months to be able to push myself the best.

January: Kick up Workouts / Drink More Water

Since my workouts have been low key I am coming back from my vacation and jumping back into Crossfit, and I have a 10 class pack to a studio which offers all sorts of classes, core barre and trx are two I want to try. Then I plan on starting Insanity once I head back to school.

Also another small goal, put more water in my system! I have such phases about drinking sometimes I’m overly hydrated and others i’m super dehydrated. Water = good for you!

February:

More Veggies! Longer Runs, also find a race to sign up for!

Fruits have never been a problem for me to get, veggies I like, but want to add some more! I’ve been working on my running, I want to achieve an easy 5 mile runs by spring so start increasing distance now !

March

Cut Sugar

Okay, secrets out I might have the biggest sweet tooth in the world, for reals its out of control. I need to find better ways to naturally satisfy my sweet tooth. I’m the first to reach for a candy bar, and once and a while thats not bad but it definitely needs to decrease!

Also in 2012 I want to
-bring up my GPA in school, not that its bad but I think I can do better
– find an internship
– make my wardrobe a little more adult like
– practice my patience, try to gain a little more πŸ˜‰
– realize that working is good, but make more time for a little relaxation!

Here’s to a healthy more balanced 2012.

What are your goals?!

Traveling!

Hi All!

I’m writing away from my usual cold Boston area, and I’m on the other side in the warmer but still chilly San Francisco. After a long night of delays we finally made it, at about 4 am East Coast time. So often airport food can be a killer but I came prepared! bringing-

my favorite, Granny Smith Apple πŸ™‚
-CalNatural Cappichino protien shake
-think thin bar

I’ll be the first to admit I might have had a few of my moms good and plenty but I was glad to steer clear of salty greasy airport food! But the lesson I learned…

That protein shake? Yah, should have drank that on the ride to the airport and not waited until 3 seconds before going through security ( I thought if it was still sealed I’d get through security, nope)

But alas I made it, my day today has been off food wise because of the long travel and time change, but oh well I’ll get it down!

I got in a run this morning, which was a nice way to see the sights! My brother has an incredible view of the bridge in this apartment , lucky boy

Stay tuned for a trip rehash! and Pictures! πŸ™‚

The Best Christmas Present Ever

So… I’ve said it before, I am gluten-intolerant, and well its not so easy for me. I miss my Sunday morning bagels, yum blueberry πŸ™‚ But its okay! I’ve found some very good substitutes/ cut a lot out of my diet. But there are some things that I miss of course.

I babysit regularly for two different families, both I love very much and would do anything for. However, they both are very very different. One of the families I babysit for the mom is very organized, she has to be with twin baby girls, who are adorable by the way. She too has had to eat gluten free due to one of her girls being intolerant as well. I always find the yummiest, healthier, and usually g-free snacks there. Well today was my last morning with them for a while due to Christmas, and a change in schedule next semester. I hope to continue with them but probably not as regularly as I have. So I got this beautiful big box from her, the sweetest thing… and inside… I found all these goodies….. ALL GLUTEN FREE! πŸ™‚ No words can describe how happy I was, it was the most thoughtful thing ever!

I’m so excited to try all these new goodies, and I’m so thankful!

One Last Thought: We all are so lucky and many of us forget that during this season as we get frustrated not being able to find a parking spot at the store we’re going into, so take a moment and realize how lucky we all are, to have jobs, to be able to give these gifts to others, and for the gifts we receive. What if tomorrow we only woke up with the things we thanked God for?

Surviving the Holidays

So many of us write off these two weeks as oh I’ll just give up and start over again come Jan 1st. I to have been guilty of that motto previous years, but not this one!

Some tips for surviving the holiday meals

1.Keep the portion control, a cookie won’t make you fat, and neither will the correct serving size of your favorite holiday meal, just keep it to one serving. Drink water between bites, and sit down and savor the food, don’t gulf it down because you won’t feel full, and will go back for seconds

2. Keep moving, I’m always driving, I hate it so I try to get a run or a walk in a day, with this little munchkin she loves walks… ( who can say no to that face )

But its also not hard to fit in a short workout: check out ToneItUp, ARFIT, Tara Stiles, Blogilaties all on youtube, quick short workouts! and effective!

3. Guzzle down the H20, most of us are all soo dyhrdrated this time of year we mistake thirst for hungry (keeps your skin pretty and lips not chapped too for those holiday parties)

4. Eat normally, don’t starve yourself all day just to eat more at dinner, it’ll slow down your metabolism and all that jazz, don’t skip your meals, especially not breakfast!

Surviving on a Special Diet.

If you are like me, I can’t eat gluten or dairy, it can seem limiting. Every year my boyfriends family hosts a Christmas Eve party, and order chinese food. Some of you might not know how much gluten is hidden in chinese food = no go for me.

But I don’t want to be that weird girl sitting in the corner with my “special food” so my suggestions

1. Bring something everyone will enjoy, its a nice thing to do anyways when you go to a party is to bring a dish, Saturday I hope to bring 3, a salad, main dish, and dessert. I’ve got the salad recipe selected :

Cranberry and Almond Salad

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound (2 large) carrots, peeled and shaved with a vegetable peeler
  • 12 ounces mixed greens
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup Sweet and Spicy Almonds
  • 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon white-wine vinegar
  • 4 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 4 teaspoons olive oil
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, toss carrots, greens, and half the cranberries and almonds. In a small bowl, whisk vinegar, mustard, and oil.
  2. Drizzle salad with vinaigrette; season with salt and pepper. Toss to combine. Garnish with remaining cranberries and almonds.

Super easy! Now if I only had ideas for a healthier side dessert / main dish, if you have any ideas let me know, course I am going to wait until the last minute to figure it out ahah!

2. Don’t draw attention to it, or get on your soapbox if someone asks they ask, but don’t go around with a loudspeaker about what you are/aren’t eating, just relax and enjoy

Big News: Day after Christmas I’m shipping off to San Francisco, get excited I’ll be posting all about my trip for sure! So excited, and excited to see my big brother as well!

I plan on starting a workout review series too! Crossfit, yoga, Core Barre, Zumba, TRX so let me know if you are interested in any others as well! πŸ™‚

Have the Happiest Holiday Season ever everyone xox, don’t let all your handwork go to waste in these two weeks!

Finding that Motivation

Oh the snooze button, you are my best friend, and my worse enemy.

One this that is my biggest challenge is getting myself to the gym. I feel so much better if I do it right when I get up, I find if I wait until later in the day, I find more excuses not to go. However, with 8 am class, well the gym in the morning is kind of hard. So what keeps me motivated.

1. Partners.
I am never one to bail out on set plans, I just can’t do it. Luckily I live next to two boys who love the gym as much as I do. I’ve introduced them to the morning sesh and they love it. I make plans with them, on days I don’t have 8 ams and we go and get a good hour in, have an omelet for breakfast and break off to go shower and get to class!

2. Don’t Waste Your $$
This summer I was a proud member of Crossfit Full Potential. The monthly fee was pretty heafty but I got a killer workout which I loved. I also worked 50-60 hours a week. So it was the 630 am class I had to be at. I never missed it, because I knew if I didn’t go I’d never get that class back that I paid for with my hard earned money. …. If only I felt that way about my 8am’s….

3. Plan your week out
Every week, or every other week I try to sit down and plan everything out for the next week or two weeks. I’ve got lots of lists. Life (errands and such), homework, meals, andd workouts. Having a plan on what I work on each days keeps me motivated not to miss because then I will feel behind, and well, thats the worse.

4. Create Goals
Creating goals for yourself is important and every part of your life, including fitness. Start small, even if it’s “If I get to the gym everyday this week, I can treat myself to _____ on Sunday” or if I achieve a certain goal or time at the gym you can get new sneaks or something. It becomes a game, which everyone loves.

5. Get Your Sleep
Maybe if I just got to bed on time I wouldn’t want to push that button so bad. (hmm, what a thought, maybe I should get off pinterest)

6. Get Crafty
The Tone it Up girl’s encouraged us to make a vision board, mines right next to my door so I can see it every time I leave, I’m hoping to make another over winter break, but here’s my current one.

Hope You Guys are surveying this season with sanity!
I am finally on winter break so hopefully my posts will come more often! If you have any ideas let me know! πŸ™‚

How To Survive Finals

Finals, I’m procrastinating at the thought of them.

Its typically the time of the year where my diet goes to hell, like no joke, jellybeans, clementines, energy drinks, for the whole week. I wish I was kidding. Last semester I took a different approach, I slept, I drank my H20, I made lists, I ate real food, and I worked out. I felt great, and somewhat of a brainiac.

Tips for keeping sane over finals, or even a super busy work week

1. Take 15 mins, and think about the week ahead, what time you have things. Make lists
Homework Left to Do
Days & Times of Finals
Tasks to Study
Life Tasks

Be practical, and then after you have all that think about what times you can make it to the dinning hall for which meals. For the meals you can’t make it to the dinning hall, pick out what you want to eat, Ie, granola and almond milk, grapefruit pomegranate are all my favorites. Go to the grocery store, stock up. Also we all snack during study time, let’s make some smart choices, jelly beans are good, but trust me, they give you a killer belly ache. Dried fruit, roasted seaweed, almonds are my personal favorites, keep it low in sugar which will make you crash. Also coconut water is a good way to keep hydrated.

2. Exercise

We all get stressed out, its proven that raising that heart rate is a great way to reduce stress. It actually helps studying, I know it sounds funny. It sounds crazy but wake up early, put the snooze button across the room… go run, come back and read over your notes its an excellent way to cram.

Good Exercise Ideas:
Obviously I recommend the Tone It Up girls, because who wouldn’t want to look like them?
They’re quick and effective

And my part two of exercise

Get Your Stretch On, Yoga Yoga Yoga
Even if you just start your morning with some deep breaths and stretches, it’ll do nothing but relax and benefit you! – Check out Tara Stiles Yoga on Youtube! πŸ™‚

Plan some chunks of time to get into the gym along with your lists. Its never an easy thing to balance it all. Try to get some sit-ups and pushups and stretches in each day as the very minimum, or my favorite the toothbrush workout…

.. to my roommates reading this you don’t know but theres a toothbrush workout

10 knee raises, each side
10 squats
20 lunges
10 squats
10 knee raises each side

it fits into the time it takes my sonic care toothbrush to brush my pearly whites

good lucks my loves xoxo

Nice to Meet You!

I guess the next item on the list of things to do is introduce myself. I won’t go into long boring detail because I’m sure what will really count is what i say in the upcoming posts, but hey, fundamentals are the building blocks of fun, at least thats what Uptown Girls taught me…

My Name is Jenn and I’m freshly 21. Yikes, is it bad that saying that makes me feel old? Or miss the days where I did nothing but color and think my 21 year old brother was the coolest person ever.. But the coloring part hasn’t changed. Anyways!

I’m a College Student, working my butt of as a Finance and Economics double major. I feel as though I am one of the few college students who cares about the gym, and eating right, although most girls are still on the idea that they go to the gym to get skinny, and work off that slice of cake they had for dinner. Β I am gluten and dairy free, most of the time, sometimes I just can’t resist, but I always regret it later. This is because I have allergies to both. I am a lover of all things chocolate, and fruits. I have a boyfriend, and a crazy family. For the most part thats all you really need to know, because everything else will be told when you need to know it, but my life is really told in pictures so here we go! πŸ™‚

Β this is me in my recent favorite dress

My pretty roommates, or some of them, oh who i see every morning

my new baby Sophie, the recent love of my life, she’s also a demonΒ

This is my best friend (on the right) , there are two others, but she takes the cake

As I mentioned, I’m a college student, and this blog has recently made me happy, but its finals time, so posts won’t come often, forgive me!

A Big First Step

Yikes, a first post. This sets the scene for the whole blog huh, well bear with me I’m a little blog baby.

Recently, I was like almost every other college girl, sitting on my couch watching the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. A special I have watched the past few years. Last year was an interesting time in my life, and I remember saying to a guy friend of mine, here’s to wanting to be anorexic after watching this. That used to be my mindset, skinny, bones, was attractive and attaining that would make me happy. HA! Was I wrong, but I am thankful for that brief moment of thought, come January in my search of ways to become skinnier, I found the Tone It Up girls, if you don’t know who they are click… HERE!Β In the processes of the last year, I’ve learned that building lean tone muscle makes me look, feel, and preform better. So this year I am sitting on my couch, and I see these beautiful models and unlike last year, I find the ones who workout like boxing, yoga, weights, and have muscle tone are the sexier girls rather than the ones that are skin and bones. Yes, they make me want to go to the gym, and eat healthier. To get their glow in their skin and their muscle tone, not to starve myself and over exercise myself, what good will that do me. That is what I am here to share with all of you, my healthy ways. I am no where near perfect, especially with my love for treats. Welcoming you into my life, and hopefully bringing you along my fit life journey.

Here goes nothing!
